Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister attended a meeting of foreign ministers from the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), held 16-17 July 2018 in Brussels under the theme “Building Bridges and Strengthening Our Partnership to Face Global Challenges”.

The goal of this meeting was further development of the partnership between the two regions and was dedicated to consolidating multilateralism and strengthening the cooperation in global forums, as well as common challenges and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The ministers agreed to work more closely together in support of inclusive and sustainable economies, as well as trade, investments, and productivity.

During the plenary part of the meeting, Pejčinović Burić delivered a presentation on “Consolidating Multilateralism and Strengthening the Cooperation in Global Forums”.

“Our successful cooperation in the EU-CELAC format is due to our shared values, historical ties and millions of European descendants living in Latin America. Half a million of them are of Croatian descent, because of which we feel not only a connection but also a responsibility to work on achieving common goals in the areas of peace, security, democracy, human rights, fighting poverty, socioeconomic development, fighting terrorism and climate changes,” the minister said.

Pejčinović Burić underlined that security and economic challenges required joint action and seeking solutions that would improve the lives of all citizens. “Forums like this one play an important role in strengthening dialogue, promoting strategic relations, increasing mutual visibility and advancing cooperation,” she said.

On the margins of the forum, Pejčinović Burić held a working meeting with Jorge Marcelo Faurie, the Argentinian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship.
