(Hina) – Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miro Kovač signed a book of condolence at the Israeli Embassy in Zagreb on Friday over the death of former Israeli president and prime minister Shimon Peres, describing him as a great world statesman and one of the chief architects of the Middle East peace process.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and myself, please accept our deepest condolences and sympathies,” wrote Kovač.

“Peres was a great world statesman who fought for his beliefs and was one of the chief architects of the Middle East peace process. Croatia, which he visited, will remember him as its friend,” ends Kovač’s entry.

Shimon Peres passed away aged 93. His funeral in Jerusalem was attended by Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović along with numerous statesmen from 70 odd countries, including the U.S. President Barack Obama and former president Bill Clinton. Among the Croatian delegation was Oscar winner and Holocaust survivor Branko Lustig, who donated his Oscar for “Schindler’s List” to Yad Vashem – the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre.
