FM attends FAC

Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman 20 January 2020 in Brussels attended a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC)

Foreign and European Affairs Minister Gordan Grlić Radman 20 January 2020 in Brussels attended a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council (FAC), which discussed Libya, the Sahel, climate diplomacy and the Middle East Peace Process (MEPP).

The Council was informed about the outcome of the Berlin conference on Libya of 19 January. The ministers discussed how the EU could engage more forcefully in the process towards a political solution, in particular to help implement the agreed ceasefire and enforce the UN arms embargo.

Given the deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in the Sahel, the ministers expressed support for renewing the existing Sahel Strategy to increase the impact of EU’s action in support of security and stability in the region.

The Council underlined the importance of the Green Deal’s external dimension with a view to reaching out to third countries, generating more climate ambition at global level and enhancing implementation from partners.

Following on the extraordinary FAC of 10 January, the ministers once again discussed the situation in the Middle East, which is still unstable and at risk of further deterioration. The EU has stepped up its diplomatic engagement to defuse tensions and increase stability. The EU remains committed to the JCPoA and will continue pushing Iran to meet its obligations. The EU will also continue to support the stabilization of Iraq. Concerning the MEPP, the ministers underscored the EU’s commitment to a two-state solution based on negotiations.
