First anniversary of Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine, heroic resistance of Ukrainian people
The people of Ukraine have been successfully resisting Russia’s aggression for a full year now.
In addition to causing the loss of human lives and immense destruction, Russia’s aggression also represents a gross violation of the basic principles of international law. It is the single biggest threat to European security since the Cold War. Energy, food, economic disruption and disinformation have also become a means of pressure on numerous countries around the world.
However, through joint and swift reaction, democratic countries and various international organizations have stood up against such policy, as Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is not only an attack on a sovereign state, but an attack on a value system as well.
The European Union and its member states have come to Ukraine’s defence and are offering political, military, humanitarian, financial, and all other forms of assistance.
Croatia selflessly supports Ukraine as the victim of an attack and a friendly country that could benefit from our experience in the Homeland War.
Ukraine was among the first countries to recognize Croatia’s sovereignty. A day after Russia invaded Ukraine, the Croatian Parliament passed a declaration harshly condemning the aggression.
The atrocities we are witnessing have to be prosecuted. Croatia has joined the proceedings before the International Court and the European Court of Human Rights, participates in a core group dedicated to ensuring accountability for the crime of aggression, and strongly supports Ukraine’s efforts within international legal institutions.
Two political priorities for Ukraine – reintegration of occupied areas and EU membership – Croatia will continue to support systematically.
Croatia’s example shows that it is possible to defend one’s country from aggression, reform society and ultimately join the European family.
Croatia once again underlines its unconditional support to Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders.
We will persevere in that for as long as necessary, until Ukraine achieves victory and just peace.
In line with the UN Charter, Ukraine as a victim of aggression has the inalienable right to defend itself and live free throughout its territory.
Glory to Ukraine!
