Esimit Europa Project symbolizes unity, solidarity and competitiveness

Assistant Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Hrvoje Marušić met with founder of the Esimit Europa Project Igor Simčič to discuss future plans of the project which contributes to cooperation between the countries involved. The interlocutors underlined the possibility that one of the world’s fastest and technologically most advanced yacht, Esimit Europa 2, participating at one of Croatia’s regattas in 2014.

Marušić said Croatia was interested in joining as it was not only a sports project but an economic one, since it involves cutting-edge technologies which Croatia can contribute to with its rich scientific, industrial and maritime tradition.  

Sailing, notably the Esimit Europa Project, symbolizes and promotes the values of unity, solidarity, excellence and competitiveness – values on which the EU itself is founded. Marušić expressed satisfaction that Esimit Europa 2 and its international crew would sail Croatia this year for the first time.

Simčič thanked the ministry for supporting the project, adding that Croatia was a country with a rich maritime tradition, many talented sailors and excellently organized regattas.

The Esimit Europa Project was launched in 1995 and is being represented by the Esimit Europa 2 boat and the Esimit Sailing Team. Cooperation is one of the most important goals of the project, which in a unique way connects diplomacy, economy and sports, while Esimit Europa 2 sails under the European flag, spreading the message of a successful united Europe. The project had been present in Croatia is a partner of the biggest regatta Fiumanka and the European Laser Radial Youth Championship in Split. At the incentive of Minister Pusić, the Esimit Europa 2 crew was joined by one of Croatia’s best sailors, Ivan Kljaković Gašpić, European and world champion in various classes and holder of the prestigious title Croatian Sportsman of the Year.

The project’s sponsor is José Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Commission, supported by the European Parliament President Martin Schulz, Russian Foreign Minister Sergej Lavrov and numerous other European diplomats and business people, including First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Vesna Pusić.
