Deputy Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Joško Klisović 6 May in Vienna participated in the 124th meeting of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers.

Participating in the discussion on “CoE Values and European Stability: the Current Challenges”, Klisović underlined the crucial role of the oldest of pan-European organizations in unifying Europe based on common values and principles, notably today when Europe is faced with important challenges as well as worrying trends in democracy, human rights and the rule of law. He welcomed the report of the CoE secretary general on the status of human rights, democracy and the rule of law in Europe.

“A deficit of democratic standards and fundamental human rights, compounded with the growing unemployment and poverty, in contributing to the rise of extremist views and further conflicts,” Klisović said. He expressed concern over the lengthy crisis in Ukraine, which represents a threat to European security, supporting the efforts of multilateral mechanisms to stop the violence and de-escalate the crisis.

The Committee underlined the importance of holding a presidential election in Ukraine on May 25 and holding it in compliance with democratic European standards. Klisović spoke about Croatia's positions, which were in accordance with the European Union's. "The most important thing is to establish security in Ukraine," he said.

Other items on the agenda were the efficiency of the European Court of Human Rights, CoE policies towards neighbouring regions, and CoE cooperation with the EU. Austria handed over the Committee chairmanship to Azerbaijan.
