Deputy Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Joško Klisović 26 March in Donetsk opened the consulate of the Republic of Croatia and later the same day the Croatian-Ukrainian Economic Forum.

Co-organized by the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Croatian Chamber of Economy and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, the Economic Forum in Donetsk gathered 40 Croatian and Ukrainian companies from various fields of activity – from construction, infrastructure and international transport to food industry and tourism. Opening the forum, Klisović underlined the Croatian government’s determination to take the economic relations with Ukraine to the next, even more positive level, which in 2013 should result in a significant increase in trade. He said that the two countries’ economies were compatible and that Croatian companies had a lot of experience in infrastructure, renewable energy sources, agriculture, food and other branches of industry.  He stressed the efforts on part of the government to facilitate investments in Croatia, adding that in the future “two countries’ economic relations will not only be measured by the number of bilateral state treaties, but by the number of agreements signed by entrepreneurs on both sides as well”.

Later in the day, Klisović opened the first consulate of the Republic of Croatia in Ukraine, headed by Honorary Consul Aleksandr Rotov and located in Donetsk, the largest city in eastern Ukraine and one of Ukraine’s major economic hubs. The Donetsk oblast numbers 4.6 million citizens and is responsible for as much as 20% of the national industrial output and 20% of Ukraine’s GNP.

Klisović also met with Donetsk Mayor Lukianchenko. The two discussed further intensification of economic, cultural, sport and scientific relations, as well as cooperation in the regional and local level.
