The annual NATO Conference on WMD Arms Control, Disarmament and Non-Proliferation opened 6 May in Split. As the alliance’s major activity in arms control, the conference gathered highest political representatives from over 50 countries as well as representatives of international organizations such as the UN, EU, OSCE, CTBT, OPCW et al. The conference was opened by Deputy Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Joško Klisović and NATO Assistant Secretary General Gabor Iklody. In his address, Klisović underlined the significant of the conference as it gathers a wide range of countries that through joint efforts and dialogue are working on WMD non-proliferation and contributing to international security. Croatia is doing the same with its national and regional activities, for which it has received recognition. The transatlantic link and solidarity based on common values should remain at the core of the alliance’s activities, and arms control is just one in the long line of security challenges, Klisović said.

The deputy minister also held bilateral talks with Finland’s Undersecretary of State for Foreign and Security Policy Jaakko Laajava, exchanging opinions about the political and technical aspects of the two countries’ cooperation as well as the impact Croatia’s status as an EU member would have on its neighbours.
