Croatian Foreign Minister Miomir Žužul paid today, 1 July 2004, a one-day working visit to the Republic of Poland. He met in Warsaw with Poland’s Prime Minister Marek Belka
Prime Minister Belka congratulated Croatia and Minister Žužul on receiving the candidate status for the EU membership, and reminded him about the constant support Poland is giving to Croatia’s efforts in approaching the EU and NATO. Prime Minister Belka expressed his satisfaction with Croatia’s regional policy, pointing out that Poland considers Croatia to be an important stability factor in Southeast Europe.
Minister Žužul thanked for Poland’s support to Croatia’s efforts and said that he considers Poland’s experiences in adjusting the national systems according to the European rules as valuable for Croatia. Minister Žužul pointed out that considers approaching the EU and NATO to be important political and strategic goals.
Minister Žužul explained that his recent visits to Belgrade and Podgorica are a proof that the region sees Croatia as an example and a signpost on the road to the EU. Minister Žužul and Prime Minister Belka also discussed the further development of economic co-operation between Croatia and Poland.
Minister Žužul held a lecture in Warsaw before the members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Poland and students of the Diplomatic Academy of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the subject “Croatia – a bridge between Bruxelles and Southeast Europe”. Minister discussed the world’s perception of Croatia before and after receiving the EU membership candidate status, the status of the national minorities in Croatia, as well as Croatia’s role in the current political situation in Southeast Europe.
Today, Minister Žužul is meeting the President of the Polish Parliament (Sejm) Jozef Oleksy and Foreign Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz. Minister Žužul is also supposed to meet with representatives of the Croatian business community in Poland.
