Croatian Ambassador to Kairo Dražen Margeta represented Croatia at the 11th AU Summit

Croatian Ambassador to Cairo and representative to the African Union Dražen Margeta represented Croatia as an observer at the 11th Summit of the African Union (AU), held in Egypt, 24 June to 1 July, on the subject of „Water and Sanitation“

Summit participants assessed unemployment, poverty, HIV/AIDS contamination and conflicts were the biggest challenge standing before African countries, and that development and progress were only possible once peace and security were established on the continent. They agreed that ensuring drinking water and good sanitary conditions was among priorities for AU countries, and that a certain progress had already been achieved although there was a lot yet to be done.

Similarly, summit participants called on togetherness of the entire continent and mutual exchange of information in which the AU would play an active role, primarily in dealing with challenges standing before the continent, such as current food and energy crises, and global warming.

The AU summit was attended by Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, AU Commission President Jean Ping, Secretary General of the League of Arab States Amre Moussa, Presiding over the AU Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, UN Deputy Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro, and Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas. The Summit was attended by 44 delegations of member states out of 53 AU members.
