Croatia on Thursday took over the chair of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC) for the first time since 2013. The PBC is an intergovernmental advisory body established in 2005 that supports peace efforts in conflict-affected countries. Croatia became a member state in 2006 for a one-year term.

“I am honoured that you have appointed Croatia as the 2023 chair. We firmly believe that we will be able to carry on Bangladesh's efforts in strengthening the Commission and its influence,” said in his keynote address Croatia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ivan Šimonović.

“In these challenging times, marked by increasing conflicts and victims, we need optimism more than ever. I believe that the Commission can play an important role in keeping that optimism. We need examples of good practice in strengthening the resilience of societies and preventing conflicts, as well as of successful and sustainable post-conflict peace,” he added.

In 2023, the PBC will continue to grow geographically in order to include more countries on its agenda beyond Africa. It will also continue to strengthen its activities concerning prevention, resilience, peace and security, humanitarian aid and sustainable development, and will deal with departmental issues such as the rule of law, justice, strengthening of institutions and human rights, as well as the potential effects of climate on security.
