The Accession Treaty and the Final Act were signed on behalf of the Republic of Croatia by Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor and President Ivo Josipović, as well as heads of the 27 EU members.

Speeches were delivered, apart from Prime Minister Kosor and President Josipović, by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek and European Commission President José Manuel Barroso.

By signing the Accession Treaty, Croatia upgraded its status from candidate to acceding country, and became an active observer in the Council of the European Union and its preparatory bodies.

The Accession Treaty foresees Croatia becoming a full-fledged member on 1 July 2013, after it holds the accession referendum and all of the EU members finish the ratification process.

As part of the Croatian delegation, also present at the signing ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Gordan Jandroković and Secretary of State for European Integration Andrej Plenković.
