Croatia shares international community’s concern over current situation in Syria

The Republic of Croatia shares the European Union’s position that the failure to conduct the announced reforms and the continuation of repressive measures has seriously undermined President Assad’s credibility in the eyes of his own people, and should bring about the appropriate political consequences

The Republic of Croatia shares the international community’s concern over the current situation in Syria and joins the condemns of the vicious attacks by the President Assad’s regime on the civilians, as well as the appeals to the Syrian authorities to end the repression, free the arrested demonstrators, ensure free access for the international humanitarian organizations and cooperate with the international human rights protection mechanisms. The continuation of violence, further casualties and the growing number of refugees, as evidenced by the most recent reports, are unacceptable and require additional efforts on part of the international community to normalize the situation and prevent further mass violation of human rights in Syria. Croatia deems that stopping the violence is a precondition for achieving a true and all-encompassing political process based on dialogue that will allow Syria to overcome the current situation and strengthen the democratic standards and rule of law.

The Republic of Croatia shares the European Union’s position that the failure to conduct the announced reforms and the continuation of repressive measures has seriously undermined President Assad’s credibility in the eyes of his own people, and should bring about the appropriate political consequences.

The Croatian Government’s decision from May 9th implemented on the national level the European Council’s decision imposing restrictive measures against Syria. Croatia will continue to harmonize its positions on the situation in Syria, as well as the possibility of further specific restrictive measures with the European Union.

Croatia had supported the calling of the special session of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation of human rights in Syria, held August 22nd in Geneva, and called in its statement for the bringing to justice of all those responsible for the crimes committed, as well as backed the founding of the international commission of inquiry tasked with running an independent investigation into all the violation of the international human rights standards in Syria.
