Croatia marks Human Rights Day
On 10 December, we commemorate the Human Rights Day to honour the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights
On 10 December, we commemorate the Human Rights Day to honour the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which for the first time in history recognized each person’s right to life, liberty and security. This year we also mark the 10th anniversary of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, making 2019 a veritable “year of human rights”.
Still, even so many years after the adoption of this important document, we are witnesses to human right violations across the globe. Children and young people are still its most frequent victims, whether it is child labour, child soldiers or sexual exploitation. Croatia strongly supports the youth in their fights for human rights and a better future.
The promotion and protection of human rights are the cornerstones of Croatia’s foreign policy, by which we contribute to international peace, security and progress, in line with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
As a member of key international and regional organizations and initiatives, Croatia is basing its foreign activities on the promotion and protection of vulnerable groups’ human rights, notably children, women in violent and war environments, the elderly, national minorities and the disabled, in which we cooperate with the civil society. We advocate respect for the universality and indivisibility of human rights as well as efficient and indiscriminate protection of all individuals in all countries.
Its commitment to the highest standards of human rights protection Croatia has also shown by being active in the UN Human Rights Council during its 2017-2019 membership.
In a changing global environment, Croatia together with the EU remains a strong advocate of multilateral cooperation as a pillar of human rights promotion and protection.
