Croatia condemns in the harshest terms the City of Trieste’s decision to erect a monument to Gabriele D'Annunzio, on the 100th anniversary of the occupation of Rijeka.

Although this is a decision made by a local not state government, such behaviour, as well as celebrating the 100th anniversary of the occupation of Rijeka in a number of Italian cities, does not only harm the two countries’ friendly and good-neighbourly relations, but extols an ideology and activities that stand in stark contrast to European values.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs expressed its dissatisfaction and concern through diplomatic channels, delivering a protest note to the Italian ambassador.
