On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, State Secretary for Political Affair, Frano Matušić held the first round of political consultations with the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia, Phon Rattanak Khuon.

Both officials expressed satisfaction with the development of bilateral relations to date, as demonstrated by these inaugural political consultations, which are part of a mechanism established by the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

During the consultations, discussions focused on existing cooperation as well as opportunities for further development in both bilateral and multilateral spheres. Special emphasis was placed on strengthening economic and trade exchanges, highlighting the potential of Croatian ports as possible entry points for the export of Cambodian goods to European markets. A day prior, the Cambodian delegation visited the Port of Rijeka, where they were introduced to the port's projects and capabilities.

Further discussions addressed potential collaboration in demining, an area in which both countries have significant experience, as well as cooperation in tourism, science, and education. Both sides also underscored the importance of strengthening EU-Cambodia bilateral relations and collaboration within the EU-ASEAN framework. The consultations also covered current geopolitical issues, particularly the Russian aggression against Ukraine, along with an exchange of perspectives on other global and regional topics, including the situations in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
