Croatia applauds call for Italian broadcasters to abandon interfering frequencies

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs welcomes the decision by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development to issue a public call for Italian broadcasters to voluntarily abandon TV and radio frequencies interfering with signals from the neighbouring countries

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs welcomes the decision by the Italian Ministry of Economic Development to issue a public call for Italian broadcasters to voluntarily abandon TV and radio frequencies interfering with signals from the neighbouring countries, including Croatia, by 1 December 2015. To implement said decision, i.e. abandon channels used contrary to regulations by the competent international bodies, the Italian Ministry of Economic Development had allocated EUR 50,826,000 along with ensuring alternative frequencies for those providers who wish to continue broadcasting.

The MFEA considers that said decision marks the beginning of finally removing Italian broadcasters from the frequencies which were, in accordance with international regulations, given to Croatia.  

The ministry cooperated in resolving this issue with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, Croatian Regulatory Authority for Network Industries (HAKOM), Electronic Media Agency, Transmitters and Communications ltd and the injured Croatian parties. The Croatian side’s concerns were systematically communicated to the Italian side via bilateral contacts. Also utilized were the EU and International Telecommunication Union mechanism.

The MFAE is pleased that the issue is finally going to be resolved in a satisfactory manner and would like to thank the Italian Embassy in Zagreb for their cooperation in the matter.
