Commemoration of Professor Emeritus Zvonimir Šeparović

The University of Zagreb, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Justice and Public Administration on Friday held a commemoration of Professor Emeritus Zvonimir Šeparović in the lobby of the National and University Library in Zagreb.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister Grlić Radman said:

“Professor Šeparović’s departure coincided with the 30th anniversary of Croatia’s international recognition. He was the foreign minister precisely during the fight for recognition, from July 1991 until May 1992, after which he was appointed Croatia’s first ambassador to the UN.

As the foreign minister, Šeparović toured the world, convincing foreign officials to help Croatia and recognize it as soon as possible, drawing on his legal contacts and connections.  

His efforts are built into the very core of Croatia’s positively patriotic and democratic ambitions.”

Professor Šeparović was also the vice-dean, dean and rector of the Zagreb Faculty of Law, as well as the justice minister during the sixth Croatian government.

He passed away quietly, even though his work – which also included pioneering victimology, advocating the abolishment of death penalty and authoring a number of books and papers – left a lasting trace.

In 2019, Professor Šeparović was awarded the Order of Ante Starčević for his contribution to Croatia’s independence, state-building and international reputation.
