Ambassador Vukas handed credentials to Iraqi President Talabani

Ambassador Jerko Vukas, Head of the Special Croatian Mission to Iraq, handed Wednesday 2 August 2006 his credentials to Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, during the three-day official visit of the MFAEI delegation to Iraq, 1-3 August 2006

This is the first visit by a Croatian delegation to Iraq, and is led by Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Pjer Šimunović.

The MFAEI delegation is holding meetings in Baghdad with a series of highest Iraqi officials, including Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari, and the leading representatives of the international community present in Iraq.

The Republic of Croatia supports Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki’s new Government and wishes to contribute to the stabilisation and democratisation of Iraq. The MFAEI delegation is holding meetings on the enhancement of the relations between the two countries, the most appropriate ways for Croatia to, in accordance with its possibilities, assist Iraq, and how the Croatian companies can participate in the reconstruction.

The MFAEI delegation is also making arrangements for the setting up of a permanent Croatian diplomatic presence in Iraq.

The delegation has also visited the International Police Academy in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, where three Croatian police instructors are taking part in the training of the Iraqi policemen.
