Ambassador Mrđen Korać elected vice-chair of OPCW Executive Council

Croatian ambassador in The Hague Vesela Mrđen Korać was elected as vice-chair of the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW)

Croatian ambassador in The Hague Vesela Mrđen Korać was elected as vice-chair of the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the May 2014-May 2015 period.

At the 75th regular session held 6 March, Croatian ambassador in The Hague and permanent representative at OPCW Vesela Mrđen Korać was elected as vice-chair of the Executive Council for a one-year term to start 12 May. During said period three regular sessions are planned as well as numerous extraordinary meeting due to the importance of destroying Syrian weapons.

Mrđen Korać was elected vice-chair owing to her active engagement, notably during her two-year term in the Executive Council from May 2011 to May 2013, after which Croatia was re-elected as a member at the 18th annual Conference of OPCW State Parties in December 2013 for a two-year term from May 2014 to May 2016 and also got a set on the Executive Council Chairmanship.

The OPCW has 190 member states, while the Executive Council has 41 members, of which 16 are permanent, while half of the remaining 25 are elected each year at the proposal of the regional groups. The chairmanship, which is the governing body of the Executive Council, consists of five members – one from each of the regional groups. The newly-elected members are Uruguay (the chairman), Croatia, Libya, Japan and Italy.
