30 years of Croatia’s UN membership

Today Croatia marks the 30th anniversary of United Nations membership. Joining the UN was a crown in the process of international recognition of Croatia’s independence and the reinstatement of its sovereignty.

During the first years of UN membership, the priority of Croatia’s diplomatic efforts was to ensure the cessation of the Great Serbian aggression, defend Croatia’s internationally recognised borders, care for hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons as well as refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and ensure a peaceful reintegration of the occupied areas.

What followed was Croatia’s affirmation on the global political scene through its active participation in various UN bodies. Croatia has been a non-permanent member of the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Human Rights Council, the Peacebuilding Commission, and a number of other bodies and commissions. The contribution of Croatian troops, police officers and diplomats in the UN-led peacekeeping missions has been widely recognized, turning Croatia into an exporter of peace and security.

Croatia is again sitting on ECOSOC for the 2022-2024 period, during which we will be guided by priorities that include implementing Agenda 2030 and promoting One Health.

Croatia is among the spearheads of a number of UN initiatives and reform processes, including the initiative for responsible use of the right to veto and the Responsibility to Protection concept, as well as various human rights initiatives.

The global challenges of today, from climate change, pandemics, hunger and poverty to energy crisis, require a joint approach and concerted effort. In its activities, Croatia firmly supports multilateralism as a form of global cooperation.

Going forward, Croatia will once again apply for membership in the Peacebuilding Commission, Security Council and the Human Rights Council, and will continue to strengthen its international reputation and position by taking active part in all of the key UN processes. The 30th anniversary of UN membership will be marked at a conference scheduled for 29 May.
