Meeting of the Council of Ministers of Energy (ENER), Luxembourg, 8th June 2015

The Energy Council meeting under the Latvian Presidency took place in Luxembourg, on 8th June 2015. Ambassador Goran štefanic, Deputy Permanent Representative, (COREPER I) headed the Croatian delegation on the Council. The Council discussed the Strategy of energy security, since the security is one of the most important objectives of the Framework Strategy of the Energy Union. Croatia is strongly committed to the development of energy infrastructure and called for the rapid mobilization of financial resources for the financing of projects of common interest (PCI) and the strengthening of the Energy Community. Furthermore, the Council adopted conclusions on the implementation of the Energy Union in which there is the emphasis on empowering consumers and attracting investments in the energy sector. After the official part, the energy ministers discussed the overall strategy for capacity building and storage of LNG which was was the first opportunity to exchange views on this subject. After the official Energy Council meeting, ministers had a working lunch during which they debated on the new comprehensive strategy for LNG and storage. Commissioner for climate action and energy, Miguel Arias Cañete stressed the importance of strengthening Europe LNG capacity and construction of interconnection, which will make better use of existing terminals, and thus consequently improve the security of supply. Croatia strongly supports the development of a strategy and announced an active engagement in the development of the strategy. Construction of the LNG terminal on the island Krk is the top priority of the energy projects, which is essential for long-term gas supply of Croatia and the diversification of sources and routes for the wider region of Central and Southeastern Europe. The strategy is currently being prepared by the European Commsisson and according to the announcement, is to be published by the end of 2015.
