It is right to support country defending itself
The minister said that Russia’s aggression brought loss of life, destruction and mass displacement of people. “Accountability for these crimes is extremely important in order to provide at least some comfort and sense of justice to the victims and their families, but also to serve as a deterrent to other potential perpetrators,” he underscored.
Grlić Radman went on to say that this aggression is not only an attack on Ukraine, but the whole sovereign world as well. “The effects of war are felt globally, especially in terms of food and energy insecurity. Its goal is to invalidate the UN Charter and the very tenants of international law, and push global security into an age where brute force and land grab are the accepted norm,” he said.
The minister reflected on Croatia’s own experience in the Homeland War, expressing sympathy for and support to Ukraine as a sovereign and independent country, and highlighting the courage of all those who defend their homes and homeland. “Not so long ago, Croatia was a victim of a very similar war, with almost the same pretext and justification. In that difficult situation, every help mattered. We will therefore continue to stand by Ukraine and its people. The resolution adopted by the Security Council yesterday recognizes the tragedy and injustice done to Ukraine. In this war, there is only one side we can stand on, and that is the side protecting the right of a country to defend itself. It is our duty to support this just cause,” Grlić Radman concluded.
