Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlic Radman on Friday participated in a video conference of the UN Security Council organized by Estonia"s presidency on "75 Years Since the End of World War II on European Soil - Lessons Learned for Preventing Future Atrocities, Responsibility of the Security Council".
Addressing the conference, Grlic Radman underscored that the establishment of the United Nations after World War II was a historical achievement, but that armed conflicts were still a part of global everyday reality.
He recalled that Croatia, during the tragedy and trauma of the 1990s war on its soil, had itself experienced the importance of the Security Council, the UN peacekeeping operations and the international community"s efforts. Based on that, Croatia is an active advocate of multilateralism and the responsibility to protect the population, with an emphasis on conflict prevention and international responsibility mechanisms.
However, the reality has shown that it is necessary to implement reforms to improve the efficiency and relevance of the UN, notably the Security Council, so that it could assume its responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.
In addition, Grlic Radman reflected on the coronavirus outbreak, saying he hoped that the joint response to the crisis would strengthen international organizations and the rule-based order so that we could continue striving for a better world, one that is more inclusive and humane.
