Cravat decorating Peace Monument at UN
The ceremony of decorating the Peace Monument by Croatian artist Antun Augustincic in front of the UN building in New York with the Croatian cravat took place on the 15th January 2020. The event symbolically marked the beginning of the Croatian Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2020. H. E. Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, the President of the General Assembly, attended the event as well as Permanent Representatives of European Union Member States.
In 2020, the global community will mark 75th anniversary of the UN charter, but also 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and 20 years since the adaptation of UN SC Resolution 1325, the goal of which is to emphasize the role of women in the process of achieving peace and security.
In his address Permanent Representative Ivan šimonovic emphasised that to create lasting peace, we need women’s voices and leadership, because they have power to be agents of change. In many ways, the Peace Monument sends this message to the world. It is a 5.5 metre high bronze sculpture of a woman who is riding a horse with an olive branch in one hand and a globe in the other; a cloak that is fluttering on her back and a horse in a stance that suggests a powerful forward movement, in other words, a symbolic leading of the nations of the world towards peace. The monument is a clear symbol of United Nations quest for women, peace and security.
