First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign and European Affairs Minister Vesna Pusic participated in the 28th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
In her address, Pusic said there were three types of human rights violations in today"s world.
First and foremost, these are violations of women"s rights, which are still present today worldwide, Pusic said. We must change methods and be more efficient in the fight for women"s rights, Pusic said, stressing that national methods of fighting corruption and crime were followed while countries" efficiency in fighting sexual violence, both in war and peace, was not monitored. “If this problem is not addressed in an efficient way, it will become a major problem and that is why this type of violence needs to be fought resolutely,” she said.
Secondly, there are severe violations of human rights in Ukraine. “We must sit down and immediately find a way to stop human rights violations in Ukraine,” she added.
As the third group of problems Pusic identified violations of the freedom of speech manifested as hate speech. Hate speech is the reason for atrocities committed by Islamic State, and also present are anti-Semitism, anti-Islamism and recruitment of young people to fight alongside Islamists, Pusic said. She added that the murder of Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov belonged in that category as well.
Pusic took the opportunity to recall Croatia’s application for the UN Human Right Council membership, underlining it was necessary to find new ways to fight for human rights in the world.
The session of the UN Human Rights Council will last until Thursday and is being attended by representatives of 91 countries.
