On 8 November 2012 Croatia has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in the 2013-2015 period at a General Assembly session in New York.
Along with the Security Council and the General Assembly, ECOSOC is one of the main UN bodies, in charge of coordinating UN activities regarding international economic and social issues, as well as the issues of culture, education, health, human rights and fundamental freedoms. ECOSOC comprises 54 UN member countries and operates through functional, regional and standing commissions and committees, special agencies, programs and funds, as well as ad hoc working groups and other expert bodies.
Croatia was already a member of the body in 2000-2002, chairing it in 2002. The new membership is an acknowledgement of Croatia's international position and reputation, as well as an opportunity to contribute to the promotion and implementation of economic and social policies important to the UN.
Croatia was elected alongside Albania, Benin, Bolivia, Canada, Colombia, Haiti, Kuwait, Kyrgyzstan, Mauritius, Nepal, the Netherlands, San Marino, Sudan, Tunisia, Turkmenistan and the United States.
Croatia's term begins on 1 January 2013 and ends on 31 December 2015.
