The Embassy of Croatia celebrated the 15th anniversary of the international recognition of the Republic of Croatia with a concert performed by the Zagreb Guitar Quartet at the National Library and Archives in Ottawa on January 17, 2007.
An unusual large number of more than 350 guests responded to the invitation for the concert and cocktail. Among them were 35 Ambassadors, including German Ambassador, Apostolic Nuncio, the Dean of Diplomatic Corps and other members of the diplomatic community. Many representatives of Canadian institutions, Croatian associations and the Croatian community from Ottawa also attended as well as members of various universities, culture and business associations from the Capital.
The Ambassaor Vesela Mrden Korac welcomed the guests, referred to the historic moments that lead to the international recognition of the Republic of Croatia and acquainted the audience with references to the aim of the Croatian Government's foreign policy. In the framework of the activities of the Croatian Embassy in Ottawa, she emphasized among others, the continuous introduction to the Canadian people of the rich Croatian cultural heritage. Last but not least, the Ambassador addressed the Croatian community and thanked them for all their support during the course of establishing independence for the Republic of Croatia.
Mr. Randall Ware of the National Library and Archives welcomed the guests by introducing to the Canadian public a new culture. Mr. Ware accentuated the beginning of a relationship with the Embassy and the National Library and Archives of Canada. The Zagreb Guitar Quartet's excellent performance becomingly enhanced this event by performing for the Canadian audience a selection from world classics (J.S. Bach, J. Turina), Croatian contemporary composers (T. Uhlik, M. Miletic i A. Markovic), Canadian composer of jazz classic (O. Peterson) and a set of traditional Jewish songs. The public applauded the quartet with a standing ovation.
The Zagreb Guitar Quartet will perform at the final concert of the Canadian tour, on January 20th in Toronto, organized by the General Consulate of Croatia in Mississauga.
The Canadian tour is jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affaires and European Integration of the Republic of Croatia, Ministry of Culture of The Republic of Croatia, the Croatian Embassy in Ottawa and the Croatian General Consulate in Mississauga
