A commitment to common values and ideals is the foundation of good and successful bilateral relations between our two countries. Croatia has not forgotten the assistance it received from the United States in the days when it fought for independence and during its difficult road to freedom and sovereignty. Today, Croatia is returning this gesture of friendship in many areas, especially through its efforts in the global war against terrorism, as a member of a large antiterrorist coalition led by the United States.
We also value and appreciate the assistance provided by the United States in regard to the integration of our country into the European Union, as well as the reform process necessary for our entrance into NATO – both of which are key national interests of Croatia. The Republic of Croatia is confident that the expansion of NATO into Southeast Europe will be an important contribution to establishing permanent stability in this part of Europe. It will also in our opinion secure Croatia's position as a factor of stability in the region, and continued cooperation and partnership with the United States will ensure further progress in this respect.
As a profound bridge of friendship and partnership between the United States and the Republic of Croatia, I would like to highlight the special role of Croatian Americans. There are more than 2 million Croatian Americans in the United States, who have steadfastly worked and are working still on deepening, widening and strengthening political, economic and cultural ties between our two countries.
