Minister of Finance Ivan šuker Attends IMF, World Bank Spring Assembly in Washington
WASHINGTON, D.C. April 21-24, 2006 - Croatian Minister of Finance Ivan šuker was in Washington this week to attend the Spring Assembly of the IMF and World Bank, and hold meetings with representatives of these institutions. "The world finance market acknowledges the good economic and financial trends in Croatia and that the country´s high external debt does not pose a problem because Croatia can service it," said Minister šuker after the meetings. He acknowledged that Croatia has two big issues to deal with, namely, the health care system and the shipbuilding industry, stressing that these questions must be discussed in a "clear, loud and transparent" manner, and expressing confidence that they will be resolved. Minister šuker said that Croatia had achieved significant results over the last two years, including fiscal adjustments, reforms, and good macroeconomic indicators. The IMF has indicated that it is confident in the growth of the Croatian economy, and its World Economic Outlook report forecasts economic growth in Croatia to stand at 4.5% in 2006. Minister šuker said that the confidence of the finance market at which the country borrowed was the best indicator that Croatia could cope with its debt. The Croatian finance minister said he was negotiating several projects in the World Bank and that his talks have also focused on tax reform in Croatia.
