Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Gordan Jandrokovic delivered December 9th 2009 in Washington, during his official visit to the United States, a presentation at the Atlantic Council entitled Euro-Atlantic Integration Processes in South Eastern Europe: Repercussions on International Security and Stability.
The presentation was delivered as part of the NATO Forum, the Atlantic Council's main framework the discussions, debates and analysis of NATO-related topics.
Minister Jandrokovic outlined the current political and security situation in South Eastern Europe and presented the vision of the region's future development from Croatia's perspective. Improving the security situation, stability and progress in the region Minister Jandrokovic described as the fundamental challenges we share with NATO, as well as with our other partners from the Euro-Atlantic community. Croatian will continue to support all the countries in the region along their path towards NATO and the EU, said Minister Jandrokovic, adding that special attention needs to be paid to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo.
The Republic of Croatia, the minister continued, recognizes in NATO a unique organization, successful on both the political and the military level, which together with the EU can have the same importance for South Eastern Europe that they had in their previous integration processes for Western and Central Europe. Croatia, having been admitted into NATO and acceding to the EU, is an example of a successful country, all the more so since it has transformed from a recipient of international peacekeeping missions into their world-wide participant, said the minister, pointing out that Croatian military and civil persons are currently participating in 15 peacekeeping missions, including ISAF.
Minister Jandrokovic also noted the drawing up of NATO's new Strategic Concept, expressing satisfaction over the fact that by participating in it, Croatia has a unique opportunity to contribute, at the very onset of its membership, to the forming and confirmation of NATO's modern-day political goals, including the topics of strategic interest.
