On the 2nd of February the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia, in cooperation with the Croatian Young Professionals and Students Network, hosted a book and project launch.
Dr Dina Mehmedbegovic presented her recently published book A study in attitudes to languages in England and Wales: 'Who needs the languages of immigrants?'. Dr Mehmedbegovic, who started her academic career in Osijek, is a Lecturer at the Institute of Education University of London Education Research Unit, LCLL.
The book offers an in-depth study of bilingualism which is interest and significance to all communities living in diaspora. The title is a quote from a 15-year-old bilingual student which summarises her perception about the value attached to minority languages in the UK. Preservation of immigrants' home languages has always been a challenge for minority groups - especially for younger generations who are being schooled in other languages.
Additionally, dr Lid King, the Director of the Languages Company and Multilingual Cities Project Co-ordinator, previously National Languages Strategy Director for England introduced the Multilingual Cities Project to the participants. Prof. Andelka Peko dean of the J.J. Strossmayer University in Osijek together with prof. Ljiljana Kolenic, project leader, and Klara Bilic – Mestric, researcher, introduced a project: Osijek as a Multilingual City linking Osijek to 15 European cities.
