Established in 1977, the Cambridge Film Festival has been committed to delivering the very best in independent international cinema for over 30 years. The 31st edition will take place from the 15th to the 25th of September at the Arts Picturehouse cinema and across Cambridge City Centre.

Croatian Animation Programmes
The first programme is a series of award winning shorts from the Zagreb School of animation, spanning what is considered the ‘golden years' from the 1950s through to the 1970s. Among the key productions in this selection is Dusan Vukotic's ERSATZ, Vukotic was the first non-American to win an Oscar for best-Animated film in 1962.
The second series shorts have emerged from the modern school of animation, featured at many prominent festival circuits in 2010-2011 including Cannes and the prestigious Clermont-Ferrand short film festival.
Presentation by Elizabeth Hobbs: Elizabeth Hobbs is an independent animator working in East London under the name Spellbound Animations. Her short films have been screened widely internationally and won many awards.

ALONE (SAMAC)
Directior: Vatroslav Mimica. Croatia 1959. 11 mins.
Mimica uses a dialogue-free animation to explore abstract emotions in this Kafkaesque tale of the nightmare of isolation in a bureaucratic system.
ERSATZ (SUROGAT)
Director: Dušan Vukotic. Croatia 1961. 9 mins.
On the beach, a tourist inflates and blows up a whole village in plastic. In this painted and inflated ambiance there is an ersatz in plastics for everything, including sentiments.
THE WALL (ZID)
Director: Ante Zaninovic. Croatia 1965. 3mins
This is a film about two persons and a wall that blocks their path. Faced with the wall, one of them immediatelly and resigned submits, while the other refuses to admit defeat.
THE FLY (MUHA)
Director: Aleksandar Marks, Vladimir Jutriša. Croatia 1966. 8 mins
A film about the relationship between a man and bothersome fly. The aggravating persistence of the fly grows into an obsession with the man and becomes in his consciousness a veritable monster.
THE CAT (MACKA)
Director: Zlatko Bourek. Croatia 1971. 10mins
It is based on an old Aesop fable: a young poet is lonesome until Venus provides him with company, transforming his cat into a wonderful girl.
TUP TUP
Director: Nedeljko Dragic. Croatia 1973. 10 mins
A city dweller in big apartment is kept awake at night by the constant sounds of two musical beats.
SATIEMANIA
Director: Zdenko Gasparovic. Croatia 1978. 14 mins
An animated short based upon the music of Eric Satie.
