The exhibition Joyce in Pula, jointly organized by the Croatian Embassy in Dublin, the Town of Pula, the Tourism Office of Pula and Dublin´s Freemasons´ Hall and supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia was opened on 20 May 2004.
The exhibition Joyce in Pula, jointly organized by the Croatian Embassy in Dublin, the Town of Pula, the Tourism Office of Pula and Dublin´s Freemasons´ Hall and supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia was opened on 20 May 2004. It was the mane cultural event organised during the visit of the President of the Croatian Parliament, Mr Vladimir Šeks (19-21 May 2004) to Ireland. Joyce in Pula is the Croatian contribution to ReJoyce Dublin 2004 festival, marking the 100th anniversary of Bloomsday.
The Croatian Ambassador Dr Nenad Prelog introduced the exhibition of 22 panels with photographs and photomontage. Namely, Joyce was teaching English to Austro-Hungarian officers at the Berlitz School in Pula from October 1904 to March 1905. The exhibited photographs portray Pula as an attractive cultural and maritime destination of the Austro-Hungarian Empire accompanied by essays on the life of young Joyce and the town of Pula.
Senator David Norris explained Joyce´s links with Pula and invoked his memories of a stay in Croaita and Pula. Young writer and journalist Tijana Vukic presented the literary life of Pula and read the letter by Joyce sent to his brother Stanislaus about his stay in Pula. The programme also included the address by Mr Ivo Percan, director of the Pula Tourism Office, writer Tomislav Milohanic who spoke about the exhibition and musical performance by singer Elis Lovric accompanied by cellist Mr Stjepan Hauser.
