The Irish Honorary Consul in Split, former Governor of the Croatian National Bank and the first Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Ireland Dr Ante Cicin-šain held the Inaugural Lecture entitled «Ireland-European Union and Croatia» at the Four Seasons Hotel in Dublin on Friday, 29 September 2006. The lecture was organised by the Irish-Croatian Business Association with the help of the Croatian Embassy in Ireland. It was the first of annual lectures intended to promote discussion and facilitate contact between Ireland and Croatia on matters of economic and other interest. In attendance were members of the Irish Parliament, officials from the Department of Foreign Affairs, representatives of the Diplomatic Corps, businessmen, university professors, media and members of the Croatian community in Dublin.
Dr Cicin-šain's lecture consisted of three main topics: establishment of Croatian institutions during the War of Independence (mainly the Croatian National Bank), relations between Croatia and the EU and the role of Irish consultants in the development of the Croatian economy. The response to the lecture was delivered by John Hurley, the Governor of the Irish Central Bank, who said the evening was indicative of excellent relations between Ireland and Croatia in business, financial and political circles. He commanded the progress of the Croatian economy to date and stressed Ireland's firm support for Croatia's membership in the European Union.
