The Irish "no" to the Treaty of Lisbon will not halt Croatia's progress towards European Union membership, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said in Vienna on 23 June 2008 after meeting his Austrian counterpart Heinz Fischer. One of the topics discussed was the prospect of Croatia joining the European Union after Ireland rejected the treaty in a recent referendum. "I hope, and that's what we concluded in our talks, that this won't halt Croatia's progress towards the EU," Mesic said. "However, the Irish "no" is not a good message to our region or to the process of European unification," he added. Mesic said that he and Fischer discussed Croatia and its reforms, developments in the region, relations with Slovenia, and the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Kosovo. "We live in a region where a lot of things are happening. It's good to notice that we have all turned towards Europe and it seems to me that this will also be the case with Serbia, which seems to be getting a pro-European government that will help it catch up (with the other countries) on the path to Europe," Mesic said.
