On Virtual Narratives at Croatia’s Borders

The area on the right bank of the Danube River, referred to in social media as “Liberland”, is located in a delimitation zone between the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Serbia and is among the areas in which the Croatian police conducts legitimate measures and protects the interests of the Republic of Croatia. The border between the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Serbia is still the subject of negotiations between the two countries. The right bank of the Danube River is currently under the control of the Croatian border police, while the left bank is under the control of Serbian authorities, although large areas of the Republic of Croatia are found on the left bank of the Danube River, which had been the case in 1991, at the time of dissolution of the former SFRY and the establishment of the new states. Once the borderline between the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Serbia is finally determined and both sides assume control of their respective territories on the other side of the Danube River, the issues as to the exact course of the state border will have been resolved. In any case, regardless of the fact that the border has not yet been finally determined, the area concerned does not involve no man’s land (terra nullius) which could be subject to occupation by a third party. All who wish to visit the areas in the immediate vicinity of the delimitation zone between Croatia and Serbia on the right bank of the Danube River must abide by Croatian laws and EU regulations, primarily those provisions which regulate border crossings and movement in the proximity of the state border.
