Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman received the Apostolic Nuncio to the Republic of Croatia, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, on an inaugural visit on 27 May 2026.

The minister extended a warm welcome to Nuncio Girelli, who also serves as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, and wished him a successful tenure in Croatia. Nuncio Girelli noted that, at the outset of his diplomatic service, he had been particularly impressed by the large number of young believers, who represent the future of the Catholic Church in Croatia.

The discussion highlighted the excellent and substantive relations between Croatia and the Holy See, the quality of which is further confirmed by the continuity of high-level meetings, including during the pontificate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.

The interlocutors also exchanged views on a number of issues of mutual interest, including Croatia’s priorities in cooperation with other European Union Member States, the situation in Ukraine and in South-Eastern Europe, with particular emphasis on the strategic importance of the European perspective of the Western Balkans countries, as well as the preservation of the stability and functionality of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
