Croatia’s Statehood Day Celebrated in Tirana
The programme began with the national anthems of the Republic of Albania and the Republic of Croatia, followed by an address by the Ambassador of the Republic of Croatia to Albania, H.E. Academician Zlatko Kramarić. In his speech, the Ambassador reflected on the historical roots of Croatian statehood, the friendship between Croatia and Albania, and the importance of a shared European path: “This year we mark 1100 years since the coronation of King Tomislav - an event that confirms the deep roots of Croatian statehood. The Republic of Croatia is the heir to that tradition, and today’s celebration in Tirana is a reminder that political independence and peace go hand in hand with partnership and dialogue.” He also emphasized Albania’s important role in the region: “Albania is a key state for the stability of Southeast Europe. Stability in our region is not only a strategic goal - it is a shared responsibility and a pledge to future generations.”
The event continued with an address by the Special Advisor to the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia, Professor Vanda Babić Galić. Speaking on behalf of Minister Gordan Grlić Radman, she presented the digital exhibition “Croatia Since Independence” by Zvonimir Frka Petešić, which showcases the key moments of Croatia’s modern history - from the Homeland War, international recognition, and accession to NATO and the EU, to joining the Schengen Area and the Eurozone. “This exhibition is not merely a historical overview - it is a confirmation of a nation’s identity, success, and European journey. I am especially pleased that we can present it here, in a country that shares with Croatia a sincere friendship and a common European vision,” said Professor Babić Galić. She also paid special tribute to the contribution of Albanians in the defence of Croatian freedom: “At this solemn moment, I would like to express special recognition to members of the Albanian community who, during the 1990s, selflessly stood in defence of Croatia’s freedom and independence. Their contribution is an indelible part of our history and of our lasting gratitude.”
The ceremony was moderated by Vanja Gavran, First Secretary at the Embassy of the Republic of Croatia in Tirana.
The reception was accompanied by a music programme, screenings of cultural and tourism videos, and a tasting of wines from the renowned Kutjevo winery.
