Works by Croatian Artists at the “Circuits of Chance” Exhibition in Yongin

Continuing the collaboration with the Nam June Paik Art Center, which saw the realization of an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb in December 2022 to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Korea, the Nam June Paik Art Center in Yongin opened an exhibition entitled “Circuits of Chance”. The starting point of the exhibition is the New Tendencies movement, which is being presented for the first time in the Republic of Korea. Originating in the early 1960s, the New Tendencies developed into a dynamic international network of advanced artistic theories and practices, and Zagreb was then one of the most vibrant European centers for neo-constructivist and early computer art. Among the most significant artists whose works were presented at the New Tendencies exhibitions, and are also represented at the exhibition in the Republic of Korea, Vladimir Bonačić, Ivan Picelj and Aleksandar Srnec stand out.
The formation of the Croatian media scene continued through experimental video practices in the 1970s and 1980s. Sanja Iveković, Dalibor Martinis, Goran Trbuljak and Ivan Ladislav Galeta, together with regional artists such as Marina Abramović and Katalin Ladik, explored new relationships between video, performance and body, expanding the expressive and critical potential of the moving image and redefining the audience’s experience and engagement.
The early 1990s, marked by war, strongly redefined the cultural and social context in the region. Many young artists, faced with limited institutional opportunities and political instability, sought education and professional development abroad. The experiences gained in these contexts became crucial for the work of Dan Oki, Sandra Sterla, Darko Fritz, Tomo Savić-Gecan, Ivan Marušić Klif and Andreja Kulunčić, enabling them to develop a practice focused on interactivity, technological mediation and complex systems of audience perception and participation.
At the opening ceremony on March 19, 2026 at 4:00 p.m., the following persons made their remarks: Director of the Nam June Paik Art Center Park Nam-hee, Director of the MSU Vesna Meštrić, Ambassador Dr. Sc. Damir Kušen, Director of the Gyeonggi Provincial Cultural Foundation You Jeong-joo, Mayor of Yongin Lee Sang-il, and curators of the exhibition Sangah Lee and Dan Oki. As an introduction to the opening, the Korean chamber orchestra “Hwaum” performed, along with a composition by Jeon Hyun-seok, two compositions by Milko Kelemen, inspired by the work of Nam June Paik.
The following artists were presented at the exhibition: Marina Abramović, Vladimir Bonačić, Darko Fritz, Ivan Ladislav Galeta, Sanja Iveković, Andreja Kulunčić, Katalin Ladik, Dalibor Martinis, Ivan Marušić Klif, Koloman Novak, Dan Oki, Ivan Picelj, Tomo Savić-Gecan, Aleksandar Srnec, Sandra Sterle and Goran Trbuljak. The exhibition will be open until June 14, 2026.
