Ministers Grlić Radman, Attaf talk further development of Croatia-Algeria relations

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman met on Monday, 30 March 2026, in Zagreb with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Ahmed Attaf, who is on an official visit to Croatia.

The two ministers confirmed progress in the friendly relations between Croatia and Algeria, further strengthened following Grlić Radman’s visit to Algeria in 2021. Discussions focused on deepening bilateral relations and the shared interest in enhancing economic cooperation. The importance of continuous political dialogue was also emphasized, particularly regarding security and stability in the Mediterranean.

At a joint press conference, Grlić Radman highlighted Algeria’s role as an important partner in the energy sector. The significance of the LNG terminal on the island of Krk as a key supply route for the European market was also underlined. The Agreement on Cooperation between the Croatian and Algerian chambers of economy was identified as a foundation for further economic ties, with energy and shipbuilding defined as priority sectors for future investment.

Grlić Radman stressed that Croatia and the European Union regard Algeria as an important partner in preserving stability and security in North Africa and the wider Mediterranean. The importance of ongoing political dialogue and cooperation in the Mediterranean was reaffirmed, particularly in addressing challenges such as terrorism and irregular migration.

Within the framework of cooperation with Mediterranean partners, among which Algeria holds a prominent position, advancing shared interests is of particular importance for Croatia, which holds the presidency of the EU MED9 group this year. Special attention was also given to cooperation within the Union for the Mediterranean and the European Union’s new initiative, the Pact for the Mediterranean, aimed at strengthening connectivity, resilience, and inclusiveness in the region. Owing to its geostrategic position and commitment to regional cooperation, Croatia sees additional opportunities for cooperation with Algeria through these initiatives, particularly in energy, maritime connectivity, and youth mobility.

Grlić Radman emphasized that Croatia and Algeria are united by their commitment to dialogue in foreign policy and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. In this context, views were also exchanged on current international issues, including the situation in the Middle East, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and developments in the Western Balkans.

Minister Attaf’s official visit confirms the mutual readiness to further deepen political and economic cooperation and to strengthen the partnership between Croatia and Algeria.
