Confirmation of excellent relations with North Macedonia

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman paid an official visit to the Republic of North Macedonia on 26 and 27 February 2026, during which he met, inter alia, with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Timčo Mucunski.

The visit underscored that Croatia continues to provide strong and consistent support for North Macedonia’s European path. Cooperation between the two states is characterized by open political dialogue and mutual trust, while North Macedonia remains firmly committed to the implementation of strategic reforms, particularly in the areas of judicial reform, the rule of law, and the fight against corruption. Through “twinning projects,” Croatia provides technical and expert assistance, sharing its own experience gained during the European Union accession process.

Economic cooperation continues to strengthen through growing trade exchange, investments, and collaboration in tourism, energy, and infrastructure. North Macedonia’s successful presidency of the European Union Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR) further confirmed its constructive and proactive role, with a focus on EU enlargement, cross-border cooperation, youth issues, demographic challenges, and sustainable tourism.

Grlić Radman also met with the President of the Republic of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, and the President of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia, Afrim Gashi. All meetings reaffirmed the excellent and friendly bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as their strong cooperation within the framework of NATO. Croatia remains a steadfast and reliable partner and strongly supports North Macedonia’s European path, expressing readiness to further enhance political and economic cooperation and to explore new infrastructure projects, as well as collaboration in the fields of education and technology.

During the visit, meetings were also held with representatives of the Croatian community and Croatian companies operating in North Macedonia, with the aim of further strengthening partnerships and opening new areas of cooperation. Through its activities, the Croatian community makes a valuable contribution to reinforcing the friendly relations between the two states. In recent years, excellent trade relations have been developed, and there is mutual readiness to elevate them to a strategic level through stronger economic ties and more intensive political cooperation.
