The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia firmly rejects the claims contained in the press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia of 2 February 2026, which tendentiously attribute to the Republic of Croatia the alleged promotion of hatred, historical revisionism, and intolerance.
The Ministry considers unacceptable any attempts at the deliberate distortion of reality and the dissemination of unfounded insinuations aimed at discrediting the Republic of Croatia and creating a false portrayal of the Republic of Croatia and Croatian society as allegedly tolerating or encouraging ideologies and practices contrary to fundamental European values.
The continued disparagement of the Republic of Croatia, coupled with antagonistic political and media narratives prevalent in the public space of the Republic of Serbia and directed against Croatia and the Croatian people, runs counter to and directly undermines the objectives of stability, mutual understanding, and the improvement of good-neighbourly relations invoked by the Serbian side in its press release.
The Republic of Croatia consistently fosters a culture of remembrance based on historical facts and the unequivocal condemnation of all totalitarian regimes, and commemorates all victims with due respect, without discrimination.
The Ministry reiterates the need for Serbia to confront the past on the basis of truth and justice, which constitutes a key foundation for genuine reconciliation, the building of good-neighbourly relations, and a European future. This includes, inter alia, Serbia’s full cooperation in locating the 1,740 persons still missing from the Homeland War - cooperation which is currently entirely lacking on a unilateral basis - as well as addressing the consequences of the unlawful detention of approximately 30,000 Croatian veterans and Croatian citizens in numerous camps on the territory of Serbia in the early 1990s.
The Ministry once again calls upon the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia to engage in an open and balanced dialogue, to which the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Republic of Croatia remains committed despite the absence of political will on the Serbian side, and expects that the same standards of responsibility and respect for good-neighbourly relations will be applied in the actions of the Republic of Serbia.
The Republic of Croatia remains ready for cooperation and calls upon the Republic of Serbia to align its conduct with the framework of good-neighbourly relations, while rejecting attempts to politicise history and to create artificial disputes that do not contribute to mutual understanding but instead deepen mistrust.
