Grlić Radman in Mongolia: Croatia-Mongolia relations within EU's global partnerships

Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Gordan Grlić Radman paid an official visit to Mongolia on Thursday and Friday, July 17-18, 2025 - the first visit of a Croatian foreign minister to the country in the history of bilateral relations. On this occasion, the continued progress in relations between Croatia and Mongolia was praised.

During his stay in Ulaanbaatar, Grlić Radman met with Prime Minister Zandanshatar Gombojav and Minister of Foreign Affairs Battsetseg Batmunkh.

The interlocutors agreed that there is significant potential for cooperation, especially in tourism and sports, infrastructure projects, mining and forestry, the food industry, and higher education, emphasizing that Croatia is ready to share its expertise and experience.

Grlić Radman noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1993, Croatia has regarded Mongolia as a reliable partner. He welcomed the signing of bilateral road transport agreements between the two ministries and memorandums of cooperation between the Croatian Chamber of Economy (HGK) and the Mongolian chamber, as well as between Croatian Forests and the relevant Mongolian institutions, aiming to contribute to sustainable forest management in Mongolia.

In this context, he also highlighted the importance of the signed memorandum on cooperation between diplomatic academies and the growing number of Mongolian students in Croatia.

As part of the visit, the minister also met with the European Union Ambassador to Mongolia, Ina Marciulionyte, further underlining the European dimension of relations with Mongolia.

Since the 1990s, Mongolia has undergone a successful and peaceful transition to a democratic system and, over the past thirty years, has pursued a proactive foreign policy through the so-called "third neighbour" strategy — a strategic orientation toward partners beyond its immediate neighbourhood, especially the European Union and the United States. In this context, the European Union, including Croatia as a member state, strongly supports this policy. Croatia, through its experience in sectors such as tourism, can be a valuable partner and contribute to the EU’s approach to global partners.
