On December 3, 2024, State Secretary for Europe Andreja Metelko-Zgombić met with Ina Coșeru, Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy and European Integration of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova; Ion Groza, Deputy Chair of the Committee; and Ion Poia, Head of the Moldova-Croatia Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group.
During the meeting, the participants reaffirmed the strong and friendly bilateral relations between Croatia and Moldova, emphasizing the importance of further strengthening ties across all areas. Metelko-Zgombić reiterated Croatia's readiness to continue supporting Moldova on its European path, including through sharing Croatia’s experiences from its own EU accession process.
The discussions covered Moldova’s political situation following the recent constitutional referendum on EU membership and the presidential elections, the challenging security environment, and the need to enhance Moldova's resilience to hybrid threats and destabilizing activities by Russia in the lead-up to the parliamentary elections in mid-2025. They also reviewed Moldova's progress in implementing democratic reforms essential for advancing its EU accession process.
The state secretary highlighted Croatia's unique experience with the peaceful reintegration of its Danube region, expressing Croatia's willingness to share expertise in this area. She also noted Croatia’s successful energy diversification through the establishment of the LNG terminal on the island of Krk, which could serve as a relevant model given Moldova's pressing concerns regarding energy security.
Both sides expressed interest in expanding economic cooperation beyond agriculture and the food industry, identifying opportunities in the IT sector, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, machinery manufacturing, and tourism.
