State Secretary for Political Affairs Frano Matušić participated in the informal meeting of foreign ministers of the EU member states, which took place on Thursday, August 29, 2024, in Brussels.
The informal meeting began with a discussion on the current situation on the ground in the context of Russia's aggression against Ukraine and the continued support of the European Union for Ukraine. The discussion included the participation of the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba. In his intervention, State Secretary Matušić strongly supported Ukraine and emphasized the importance of continuing assistance in the military-humanitarian and energy sectors.
Discussions with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan focused on the current state of relations between the EU and Turkey, as well as regional and global issues of mutual interest. Matušić highlighted the significance of Turkey as an important partner of the EU in resolving various crises, from Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the Middle East, and the South Caucasus to regional crises in Syria, Libya, and Iraq, as well as Turkey's crucial role in preventing illegal migration.
The situation in the Middle East was also discussed in light of the latest escalation of tensions in the region, and the current efforts aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza. The discussion featured the participation of UN Senior Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Reconstruction for Gaza, Sigrid Kaag, who reported on the humanitarian situation on the ground.
Additionally, the political crisis in Venezuela was discussed, as one month after the presidential elections held on July 28, the authorities have not yet announced independently verified results from all polling stations.
