At the 43rd session of the FAO Conference, Croatia was elected with a majority of votes as a representative of the Europe Regional Group at the FAO Council, together with Iceland and the Netherlands.
The FAO Council is the executive body that deals with matters regarding food and agriculture as well as current and future FAO activities, including programme and budget, administrative affairs, and financial management. It comprises 49 member nations from 7 regional groups.
Croatia’s term starts after the Conference of 8 July 2023 and lasts until 1 July 2025. Croatia won 130 votes, the Netherlands 122, and Iceland 95. This is also the first time Croatia is a member nation of the FAO Council, where it will actively work to enhance food security and implement the Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Croatian delegation at the Conference, which saw representatives of 188 countries, was headed by State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture Tugomir Majdak.
