Croatia marks Human Rights Day

The international community observes Human Rights Day on 10 December to commemorate the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted in 1948 the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Croatia recognizes the key role of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the building of peaceful, prosperous and inclusive societies. Guided by the principles of the UDHR, Croatia is actively trying to contribute to the advancement of the existing framework of human rights protection and remains a strong advocate of protecting human dignity, freedom and equality, without discrimination and with a full respect for civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. Therefore, Croatia continues to work dedicatedly on further developing and advancing human rights standards, notably in the context of international humanitarian law, fighting discrimination, gender equality, economic empowerment of women, as well as eliminating violence and protecting vulnerable groups.

Unfortunately, this year has been marked by mass human rights violations due to Russia’s illegal and unprovoked aggression against Ukraine, as well as other instances of deteriorating human rights standards across the globe. Cases of violence and repression against women and girls are frequent and made worse in areas of armed conflict. There have also been numerous instances of violating the right of peaceful assembly as well as the freedom of media and expression. The latter is particularly significant in these times when digital technologies and online services are widely used. It is therefore precisely the digital space where efforts to protect and further advance human right have to be directed towards, by making modern technologies widely available while at the same time curbing any form of violence and abuse.

In light of all that, in such a challenging moment for the whole world, it is paramount that our country remains committed to universal human rights norms and international obligations stemming from key international and regional organizations, in cooperation with all European and international partners.
