Foreign Service’s contribution to Croatia’s Schengen accession

Interior ministers of the EU member states greenlighted today Croatia’s entry into the Schengen Area. That means that on the same day it adopts euro, on 1 January 2023, Croatia will become a member of the Schengen Area.

Croatia’s Foreign Service has significantly contributed to the accession process.

As part of preparations for joining the free-travel zone, one of the important areas was the EU’s common visa policy, which falls within the remit of Croatia’s Foreign Service. Said area was also the subject of a demanding Schengen evaluation, part of which took place in the Croatian embassies in Moscow and Pristina.

On the day Croatia joins the Schengen Area, Croatian embassies and consulates will begin to issue visas that will be valid for all Schengen member states, which entails additional responsibilities in terms of protecting the security of the entire zone.
