The United Nations Day, 24 October, marks the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, when the organization officially came into being.
The United Nations, founded with the primary goal of preserving world peace and security by tackling economic, social and political challenges through international cooperation, have been facing numerous global challenges. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the ensuing security threats, humanitarian crisis, food insecurity and energy crisis, is undoubtedly the organization’s biggest challenge yet.
Hence, the UN Day should also be a reminder of the importance of building trust and dialogue among the member states, as well as of the principles of multilateralism and the respect for international law as the basis for responding to global challenges.
In May this year, Croatia marked the 30th anniversary of UN membership. During this time, it has achieved a number of important results within the organization and contributed to the work of prestigious UN bodies such as the Security Council, ECOSOC, Human Rights Council, Peacebuilding Commission et al.
Croatia is currently a member of ECOSOC, UNCITRAL and Committee on Contributions through the participation of Jasminka Dinić, while Anica Tomšić was elected this month to the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, effective as of January 2023.
In order to ensure continued multilateral visibility throughout the next decade, Croatia has applied for membership in the Peacebuilding Commission (2026-2027), Security Council (2030-2031) and Human Rights Council (2032-2034).
